Today’s Promise

Not only was Gideon overwhelmed, but he also questioned God:
“If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened? Why are the Midianites destroying everything — our crops, our provision?”

“God’s Way, Not My Strength”

Scripture Focus:
“The Lord said to Gideon, ‘You have too many men… Israel would boast against me, saying, ‘My own strength has saved me.’”
— Judges 7:2 (NIV)r anchor. It brings us back. It shifts our focus from the chaos to the calm presence of a loving Father who is always with us.

Devotional:

As I was meditating on the story of Gideon, I sensed the Lord whispering something deep and personal.

Gideon was not a warrior. In fact, he felt weak and unworthy. When God called him to deliver Israel, he responded,
“My clan is the weakest, and I am the least in my family.” (Judges 6:15)

Not only was Gideon overwhelmed, but he also questioned God:
“If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened? Why are the Midianites destroying everything — our crops, our provision?”

And yet, God didn’t choose someone powerful. He chose the least — so that His power would be made perfect in weakness.

But that was just the beginning. When it came time to fight, God reduced Gideon’s army from thousands to just 300 men — chosen in an unusual way, by how they drank water.

Why?

Because God was saying:
“You will not win this battle because of your army, your skill, or your strength. You will win because of Me.”

This same message is for us. Sometimes God reduces our resources, removes our options, and limits our strength — not to punish us, but to increase our dependence on Him.

Victory is not in visibility, talent, or numbers — it is in obedience, surrender, and trust.

As God took Gideon from hiding in fear to leading with faith, He is taking me — and maybe you — on a similar journey. From the high place of self-confidence to the low place of full dependence on His grace.

Prayer:

Dear Father,
Thank You for teaching me through the life of Gideon.
Even though I may feel weak, You see potential.
Help me not to boast in my job, salary, or abilities,
But to trust You with a surrendered heart.
May every victory in my life point back to Your grace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to rely on your own strength?
  2. Where is God calling you to surrender and trust Him more deeply?
